Stockport County vs. Stevenage

Stockport County vs. Stevenage on April Fool’s Day. Well, evening. As opposed to the last game, a lunchtime kickoff, a lovely spring evening match was definitely most welcome.

Although I do regret not bringing a bigger coat, seduced by the daytime blue skies!

Would County suffer in the deceptively cold evening too?

From the off, it was obvious that the nervous manner we finished Saturday’s match had long dissipated. The Hatters were in control from the start and never looked unduly threatened by the Devonshire team.

It wasn’t long before we went one-nil up: Jayden Fevrier, who had actually decided to take his man on, causing a nuisance down the right. His shot was deflected in, but they all count – and hopefully gave him a much-needed confidence boost.

The second half was more of the same. Wootton put it in the net after brilliant work from Tanto, and County never looked like giving up their two goal cushion.

Unlike the last match, we actually improved on it!

Jack Diamond cemented his good run of form with a beauty, all his own good work with a celebration to match:

The rest of the match was remakably peril-free. Unusual for a recent County game, but it was the tonic after frustrating matches against Wrexham and against Burton Albion.

It was definitely needed, too. The Wrexham game was unjust – but the Burton match was sloppy. Stockport County vs. Stevenage reminded the players how good they can be, against a solid mid-table side.

Other pluses: Beni got a run-out, no one got sent off, and I’m not sure Corey Addai needed to make a single save.

A nice comfortable evening for the fans too!

The 3 points were a well deserved boost. The playoffs inch that little bit closer…will we get back to Wembley?
