Part of the Meet New Mills project.
High Street Books and Records: Meet Adam, one half of the owners behind New Mills’ iconic books and record shop..

Name of business:
High Street Books and Records.
Where did the name come from?
We’re on High Street, and we sell books, and records. At one point I wanted to call it “New Mills & Boone” but it wasn’t approved.
What do you offer?
Books and records, but we also sell comics, CDs, greeting cards, gifts, cassettes. We have quite a selection of everything really.
How many people are in your team?
Four people including myself.
How long have you been open?
The shop itself has been open since sometime in the 1980’s, but we took over in 2010. I think.
Are you from New Mills?
I’m not, but I moved here around 1999 and then never actually left. I was born in Holmfirth and have lived in Scotland and Cambridge, before eventually ending up here. Northe, who runs the business with me, is from Sheffield. We had a choice of Manchester, or New Mills, with relation to a previous job, but we’re dog owners so opted for the scenic choice.
What do you like about having your business in New Mills/living in New Mills?
The people here are great. The shop ran into a little bit of trouble last year and the community totally rallied around us. It was incredibly appreciated and very heartwarming.
Is there anything exciting going on at the moment?
We get involved with lots of events in the area – our next one will be as part of Tree Music at The Nightingale (Strines) on the 10th May.
