Part of the Meet New Mills project.
The Cheese Wheel: Meet Suzy, one of the duo behind New Mills’ purveyor of artisan cheeses & the alcohol to go with it.

Name of business:
The Cheese Wheel.
Where did the name come from?
Even though we sell other things too, the name was always going to be cheese-led. A wheel of cheese is a whole round of cheese, the full thing – we wanted to be that total offering.
What do you offer?
Cheese! We always try to ensure a broad selection, from blue cheese to cheddars, alpine, soft, rind-washed cheeses, sheep’s milk and goat’s milk cheeses. We do seasonal cheeses too, and we try to only work with small farmyards with low production levels wherever we can. Everything is very fresh – we get deliveries at least 3 times a week to make sure of it.
We also sell a wide range of wines, craft beers, cider, ice cream. Again, everything is about minimal commercial intervention. The natural wines are from small vineyards, the ciders and beers are from small breweries.
We also do a lot of pairing events- cheese & wine, cheese & cider, cheese & Torrside Brewery!
How many people are in your team?
Just me & my husband, Mark.
How long have you been open?
August 2020. Lockdown was ok for us as people were allowed to walk, & being at the Mill – next to the Millennium Walkway – we became a bit of a destination!
Are you from New Mills?
I’m from Yorkshire, and Mark is from Cornwall. We looked at a lot of areas but we fell in love with this one when we saw the setting.
What do you like about having your business in New Mills/living in New Mills?
Lovely people! There’s a very genuine, strong community spirit. People are happy to chat and reach out. When you run a small business like this, a huge factor is the people you serve – and the people of New Mills have been very open and welcoming.
Is there anything exciting going on at the moment?
I’m going to be judging the International Cheese Awards in Staffordshire!
