Meet Marple 002: Suburban Muse

Part of the Meet Marple project.

Suburban Muse: Meet Gemma, the owner behind Marple’s trendy & sustainable fashion hotbed.

gemma from suburban muse

Name of business:

Suburban Muse

Where did the name come from?

Well our aim is to bring a bit of style inspiration to the suburbs!  That and we wanted to call it “Muse’ but that’s already been taken several times over – but at least this name is unique like the shop.

What do you sell?

An eclectic mix of handpicked styles aimed at women over the age of 40.  We have a strong focus on sustainability, quality fabrics and a fair supply chain.  We only sell sustainably resourced stock, and our impetus is on style, quality and value.

How many people are in your team?

Alongside me (Gemma), we have Jen, Kathy, Lisa, Natalia (who joined us from Ukraine) – and my mum who we volunteer to be in all our TikToks!

How long have you been open?

With incredibly bad timing we opened on Derby Way in February 2020…!  We just about survived Covid and have since moved (twice) to Market Street.

Are you from Marple?

I’m originally from the Heatons but have been here for 12 years now.

What do you like about having your business in Marple/living in Marple?

Everything!  The people, the access to all our facilities an independent businesses…we have everything!  The walks, the canals, a lovely sense of community, the variety of shops – and the fact that we get 4 Christmas trees!

Is there anything exciting going on at the moment?

Our new autumn collection is now starting to come in – and our sales rail is constantly being updated and rotated.  We’re also proud to offer discounts for Unite members and Stepping Hill staff – come ask us about them!
