Father John Misty at Manchester Apollo, 13.05.2025

I said yes immediately to shooting Father John Misty at Manchester Apollo.

Although, like a lot of people, I’ve only really heard the artist’s “Real Love Baby” (and what a tune that is by the way). I know he has a huge, well-deserved fanbase, but I’ve never delved.

I said yes straight away as somehow I’ve never shot at the legendary Manchester Apollo before!

Support on the night was from US musician Butch Bastard

But the chance to finally shoot at the Apollo was massive for me. I went to my second ever concert there in 2002 (Sum 41, in case you were wondering). I’ve seen some of my very favourite artists (Pixies, The National, Weezer) on that very stage. I needed to take some photos there!

And of course, Father John Misty (aka Josh Tillman) is an incredibly aesthetically pleasing human.

After the support slot from the enjoyable Butch Bastard, FJM started the gig with a 9 minute track. A bold move. It was also the only song we were allowed in the photo pit for, instead of the usual first 3. Nine minutes is actually a long time to take photos really – certainly easy enough to get to 1000+ shots in that time.

Luckily FJM was dynamic enough throughout the song. The worry would be that he was stationary and the photos would be incredibly repetitive. But as you can see, there was plenty of action, and shots with and without his guitar.

It’s hard to define charisma but Father John Misty oozes it, as you can tell from the photos. Fair play.

And there was even enough space to grab the important long shot from the back of the iconic Manchester venue too. Great night – consider me a new fan!
