Maghull FC vs. Holker Old Boys, 14.02.2026
This Valentine’s Day there was no more romantic a place to be than the DT Hughes Community Stadium in North Liverpool. That’s the home ground of Maghull FC, not-so-coincidentally my home town club.
I say home town club, but when I lived there it didn’t exist in the form it does now. Last time I was on that pitch it was accessible by anyone, particularly teenagers ragging their bikes on the grass. Not ideal.
However now it is a club on the up. There’s floodlights, stands, and an actual fence protecting the pitch. Maghull FC are currently in the North West Counties Football League Division 1 North – a huge progression since I was last here in the days of Saturday football. And it’s all driven entirely by volunteers.

Maghull FC vs. Holker Old Boys, then, saw a tasty 2-1 victory for the Mags. 2-0 up at half time and looking good, but the Cumbrians battled right back into the game with a goal after half time and plenty of knocking on the door thereafter.
There was even a bit of a to-do after a vicious tackle//blatant dive (delete as per your allegiance) and plenty of barbs thrown between managers. The stuff we love about non-league!
Maghull is a big small-town and it deserves a football club to match. The volunteers and players at Maghull FC have given the town that, and long may it continue.
