Meet Marple 012: Kala Walsh Ceramics

Part of the Meet Marple project.

Kala Walsh Ceramics: Meet Kala, the artisan behind Marple’s beautiful, unique, ceramic pieces and workshops.

Kala from Kala Walsh Ceramics

Name of business:

Kala Walsh Ceramics

Where did the name come from?

Because it’s me!

What do you sell?

Quirky, imperfect, slab-built ceramic pieces – all are handmade by myself.  I accept commissions and I make loads of decorations, gifts, anything you can think of.  I also run workshops, for children and for adults, where people can take part in the whole process of creating ceramics and take away their unique creations too.

How many people are in your team?

Just me!

How long have you been open?

I’ve been making ceramics for over 30 years now, and I’ve been running workshops for around 10 years.  I’ve recently moved locations and now there’s a lot more dedicated space both for workshops and for me to create things.

I also run Make It Marple, which has been going for 6 years strong and is a strictly-handmade market.

Are you from Marple?

I’m from Stockport originally – but my parents are in Marple Bridge and I’ve been in Marple since I was 18.

What do you like about having your business in Marple/living in Marple?

Everything!  The community feel, it’s familiar – you can walk down the road and say hi to ten different people you know.  There’s also a massive creative backbone here which feels unique, and people really pull together to get things done.

Is there anything exciting going on at the moment?

Halloween workshops right now, and Christmas workshops are back this year too!  We’ll be creating Christmas scenes – trees, houses, snowmen, the works – perfect for festive stocking-fillers.
