Part of the Meet Marple project.
Magpie Cottages & Spa: Meet Liz, the owner of Marple’s peaceful, idyllic retreat by the Goyt.

Name of business:
Magpie Cottages & Spa
Where did the name come from?
We moved here around 30 years ago, and when we were renovating we find an old map which labelled this area as Magpie Dale (it’s called Lower Dale now). We loved the name and went with it for the business – and there’s still loads of magpies around here too! The map is still around here somewhere…
What do you sell?
We have 5 self-catering holiday cottages, they’re all family & pet friendly. There is also a tropical spa with a hot tub, sauna & steam room, as well as offering holistic beauty treatments – we do twilight, relaxation treatments in the evenings too. We also have a chef on-site providing an in house menu for all our guests.
Plus we’re quite unique in that our guests can bring their horse on holiday with them as we have our own stables on site!
How many people are in your team?
Myself (Liz) and my husband Ian, and our son William is our chef. We also have two housekeepers and one holistic therapist.
How long have you been open?
The cottages & spa have been open for around 12 years now.
Are you from Marple?
Yes – I grew up at the end of this road! This used to be a dairy farm when I was a child and now it’s our spa.
What do you like about having your business in Marple/living in Marple?
I love Marple – it’s got such a great community spirit, the businesses all help each other, we all share and celebrate in each other’s successes. It’s a wonderful place, plus it’s rural and pretty too. We have local guests and families staying here sometimes which we love.
Is there anything exciting going on at the moment?
Midweek breaks are on offer at the moment – and we’ll have special twilight relaxation sessions coming up in October.
