New Year’s Day saw incredibly unsavoury weather – the night before saw some of the worst flooding the area has seen for years, with many places across Stockport underwater. Would this cause the League One clash between Stockport County vs. Birmingham to be called off? Not a chance.

The first ten minutes saw Birmingham dominate and deservedly score – we feared the worst. County were missing their best attacker (Louis Barry, recalled from loan), midfielder (Lewis Bate, injured) & defender (Fraser Horsfall – injured, likely for the season) and were now a goal down to the league’s biggest spending team and favourites to go up. But yet…

After the interval saw the sun come out and County deliver one of their best halves of the entire season – to a man everyone gave it beans and Birmingham were out-thought and out-fought. Southam-Hales bagged a deserved equaliser and then hit the post; Wootton rounded the keeper but a City centre-half made an improbable saving tackle. 1-1, then – but the performance meant more than the point.
The terrible weather couldn’t dampen County spirits – the atmosphere of the second half, the Cheadle End absolutely willing the ball over the line, was tremendous and much needed after a damp squib of a festive fixture list. There’s a few doubts over the strength in depth of the County squad; this match showed that at least the boys have the right attitude in spades. Up the Hatters!
